This section of W3 Journal is dedicated to IT Governance. But what is it? What exactly IS 'IT Governance'? It is a debatable question, but hopefully we can shed some light.
Wikipedia describes it as "a subset discipline of Corporate Governance focused on information technology systems and their performance and risk management.". It further describes Corporate Governance as "Corporate governance is the set of processes, customs, policies, laws and institutions affecting the way a corporation is directed, administered or controlled".
These are fair definitions, but they actually do not mean much unless the context is understood, and perhaps unless examples are available.
IT Governance is characterized by a series of drivers and frameworks. Some of the drivers themselves (often legislation) tend to have emerged as a result of high profile scandals, whilst others have evolved due to the pursuit of efficiency.
Some of the common IT Governance frameworks actually span a number of different genre, and are thus documented in other areas of this portal. However, navigation section on the right does provide a good cross section of the current major recognized methodologies.
