An Introduction to ISO 9000
The ISO 9000 standards are a set of international quality management standards and guidelines, published by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO. Specifically, ISO 9000 and ISO 9004 are guidelines, whilst ISO 9001 is the standard against which certification can be obtained. Over 300,000 certificaCurrently, oes have been issued to organisations worldwide.
The titles are as follows:
ISO 9000: Quality management systems - Fundamentals and vocabulary
ISO 9001: Quality management systems - Requirements
ISO 9004: Quality management systems - Guidelines for performance improvements
ISO 9000 was first published in 1987, and was based heavily upon BSI's standard BS 5750. It was re-published in 1994 with a greater emphasis on quality assurance. Further updates were made in 2000 (significant) and also in 2005. Similar updates were made dyuring this period to to the other ISO 9000 standards.

Note that ISO protocols require that all standards are reviewed at least every five years to establish whether they should be confirmed, revised or withdrawn
